The flu—it’s no fun! If you or your children get the flu (influenza), you will experience some or all of these:
• Fever
• feeling feverish
• Chills
• Cough
• Sore throat
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Muscle or body aches
• Headaches
• Tiredness
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea

What if? If you or your children get the flu, you can pass the flu to a young infant or an elderly and weak person.

Flu season It’s begun. Flu season lasts from September until about April.

Especially dangerous! The flu is especially dangerous for pregnant women, new babies, older people, and people with diabetes or heart problems. Let’s protect them!

Complications A person with the flu can also suffer from these complications:
• Pneumonia
• Bronchitis
• Worsening of chronic medical conditions
• Premature labor
• Low-birth-weight baby
• Baby who is stillborn (dead when born)

Hospitalization A person with these complications would need to be hospitalized.

Think ahead! When many people are in a home or a mall, there are many germs in one place. There’s a greater chance of getting the flu and spreading the flu than if you’re in the park.

Be prepared! Whether you’re planning to enjoy a birthday party or a trip to the mall, be prepared.

Be protected! Get flu shots for yourself and your family as soon as possible!

Planning to travel? Get your flu shot first! You don’t want to get sick when you’re far from home.

Safe? Yes! Some people wonder whether flu shots are safe. Yes, flu shots are safe! They work well to keep you healthy.

Everyone needs shots! All children 6 months old and older, and all adults need flu shots. If you are pregnant during flu season, your flu shot is especially important.

Even healthy people Young people can get the flu! Healthy people can get the flu!

Free flu shots for children and youth at WIC centers Babies 6 months old and older, and children up to age 18 can receive a free flu shot and other free medical services from Coach for Kids at these WIC centers.

WIC and Coach for Kids WIC does not provide flu shots, but Coach for Kids does.
